Legalization of PokerStars and Casumo in Ontario

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has recently given PokerStars and Casumo the green light to enter the Ontario iGaming market.

TSG interactive, the parent company of PokerStars, was given a two-year operator license by the AGCO in June of 2018. That license will expire in June of 2024.

Casumo’s parent firm, Pret Play, was only awarded a one-year license that will run out in June of 2023.

One of the largest regulated gambling markets in the world was planned after the historic announcement that the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) will abandon its legal monopoly on online gambling in 2019.

The Advertising and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) completed their guidelines for the new iGaming market in Ontario by September 2021. These included rules on advertisements, minimum ages for players, job requirements, and stipulations, as well as ideals for ensuring the market’s honesty, safety, and equity.

On April 4, 2022, the Ontario market opened for business, and by that time, several of the largest brands in the iGaming industry had already rushed to secure a license to do business there.

Some of the first sites to accept customers from Ontario were 888, PointsBet, Unibet, BetRivers, LeoVegas, FanDuel, and Caesars on the first day of operation. It wasn’t long until competing firms like BetVictor and DraftKings could do the same.
